Rashid turned 17 years old this year, and his future has success written all over it.
Rashid first came to Bearings last spring, a hopeful candidate for the Advanced Job Training program. Due to his strong work ethic and reliability, he moved quickly through the beginning levels of our curriculum and showed a natural aptitude and interest in the mechanical principles that go into the creation of a bike.
In no time, Rashid was ready to apply for the Advanced Job Training Program, which is the summer internship that Bearings offers. He showed up for his interview dressed to impress and easily won respect and admiration from the Bearings staff. Rashid joined the Advanced Job Training program and spent his summer developing the skills and habits essential to future employment success by working in the shop, attending financial literacy classes, and taking trips to local corporations.
Rashid was so successful during the program that he has continued to stay on at the shop, working three days a week after school. Rashid is a conscientious worker who holds himself to a high standard. He quickly earned the bike that he rides to and from work at Bearings, and he has even showed up for a 6:00am bike ride with our two mechanics, who he has become close with, and their Atlanta biking group. “His star is on the rise, and he is really an asset to Bearings,” says Andrew, the Lead Bike Mechanic. Rashid also has creative talent in photography and illustration and enjoys pursuing this in his free time.
The program staff who guided Rashid through the program have watched him grow and embody our Skills for Life: responsibility, perseverance, critical thinking, and communication. His quirky sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and courage to try new challenges are part of his charm. Bearings is better because he has been a part of our program, and all agree this is a young man to watch!
